SUMMARY:Mom’s Admin Night 💻✨
DESCRIPTION:Tips For Organizing Your Home \n \n \n \n Jessica and Ranya have a passion for helping people develop processes to arrive at solutions. They provide organizational tips to help simplify living spaces and maximize efficiency within homes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica & Ranya of Absolutely Simplified \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Hey everyone! I’m Ranya Samara and I’m Jessica Cummings.  We are math teachers at a high school and we have recently launched our professional organizing business. We are excited to share some of our organizing tips with you all. We hope you can take a couple things away from this session and make small tweaks to your own spaces. If you are so inspired\, you can transform a full closet\, pantry and room with what we share with you today.   Ranya:  Perhaps after the “stay at home order” is lifted\, we would love to come into your homes and organize your space.   A little bit about us\, we both teach math at the same high school and met about two years ago when we started our teaching positions at the school. We share similar passions\, got along super well from the beginning\, and our kids are the same age making it even more fun.   We launched Absolutely Simplified together recently. We are so excited to share what we are about and how we can help you.   Jess and I began bonding over the Marie Kondo show on Netflix and talking about it at lunch. We would send each other text message pictures of areas in our homes that we would organize.   Jessica: A little background about why we decided to go into this business together.   We had a Teacher Work Day where we were very overwhelmed with all the work that needed to be done before school started. Our department chair had asked everyone in the department to find a way that we could spruce up our math suite. Ranya and I began cleaning and it snowballed into us making over the whole space together. We completely transformed the space and it was so rewarding. The small things we did had such a large effect.   We naturally break down processes for our students being math teachers and it overflows into the way we organize a space to get to an end product that we hope everyone is happy with.   Ranya: It’s exciting to see people who are normally not into organizing feel better over a well organized space. If you aren’t into organizing\, we will happily do it for you.   Jessica: Many people have heard of the fact that clutter surrounding you clutters your mind and makes it hard for you to focus. I know that’s true for myself.   We are just going to walk you through some of the spaces in our homes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica’s Kitchen \n \n \n \n Pantry:   Jessica: We moved into this house 5 years ago and it was more space than I had ever had in a home\, so I was overwhelmed.   I didn’t think that I would ever be able to fill a pantry of this size\, but everyone knows that there comes a day when you think\, “what is going on in my pantry”.   Ranya and I took a few hours to take everything out of the pantry\, put it on the counters and grouped and edited. Something that it is important to do if you are organizing your pantry or refrigerator is to check expiration dates on everything. Throw out anything that is outdated.   If you don’t have storage on the back of your doors\, we would highly recommend it. It is prime real estate that saves you so much space. On the back of my door I have some overflow/back stock items\, canned goods etc. Just being able to put your canned goods and non perishable items on the back of the door opened up so much space for the main section of the pantry.   After we grouped the items\, we mapped out the bins that I had purchased and laid out the grid that you are seeing now. We decided what items would take up the most space\, what do I keep the most of and what size of bins I should put those in.   I bought these bins at the Container Store. You can find similar ones at IKEA. I personally want to see through the bins. I knew the label would do the job of explaining what’s in there. The plastic makes it very easy to clean out.   The plastic bins are fairly inexpensive at between $3-$8 range. You can also get wicker or another type of basket but they can get pretty pricey.   What we are doing is putting a system in place by labeling the bins and having a space where anything you buy or bring into your home has a place to go. This is truly what we set up from day 1 and that’s how we know a system works in a house.   It is a weight off my shoulders to know that everyone knows where things go. To have everything nice and accessible\, with everything having a place is so important in your pantry.   I love to use mason jars. I find that they are a nice\, affordable way to keep things air tight and fresh for longer. The XO brand airtight plastic containers but they can be very expensive ($10-$20 per container). I bought the pack of 6 large mason jars for $15 and they do the same job. My kids use them and I haven’t had a problem with them breaking. I also love a small lazy-susan. They are great if you have corners in a pantry.   I can open it up for pantry questions and then I will go through a few drawers in my kitchen to show the organization.   Question: With your pantry when you bring groceries home\, do you do anything special like move the old ones forward or do you just throw it in the bin?   Jessica: That’s a great question! If I am refilling or restocking and there is just a little left at the bottom\, I may pour that into a bowl and put the fresh stuff in at the bottom. So yes\, I do a little of that. I don’t always unpack everything until we open it. I will wait to transfer it to a container when someone goes to open the new package. I will put it into a mason jar.   I move things to the front every time I go to the grocery store. Ranya and I do the same thing in our refrigerator too\, shift the older items to the front to be used first.   Drawers & Cabinets   Jessica: One of the most important things when you are organizing your drawers is for you to be able to see everything that is in your drawer\, basket or bin.   This is my knife drawer. There are a variety of options for organizing your knives. The goal is to see everything! Something I like with knife organizers in your drawers is that if my kids go and reach their fingers over them\, they aren’t going to accidentally touch a blade. It is an aesthetic and safety benefit.   Another thing that I love to use in the kitchen are drawer dividers. The ones I have are adjustable and some can adjust the height. I’m not as fond of the plastic tray dividers because it takes away from the depth of your drawer. I love using the dividers in my drawers.   I like to put my spices in my drawer next to my stove. There was a lot of strategy that went into the layout of my kitchen. Anything that you will need to grab when cooking is going to be right next to the stove.   I have the same concept for around the sink and dishwasher. I want absolutely everything as close to the dishwasher as possible to make unloading it quickly.   I have a morning prep station with a coffee pot etc. The drawer with everything that goes with it is as close as possible. Mason jars are used in the cabinets as well as risers if you need to see things better. A tip when using mason jars. If you empty something when putting it into the jar\, cut the label and any instructions off and tape it to the outside.   In my “junk drawer” I have dividers that were $1 from Target.   We have a social media post about using different items from your house to help organize in different ways. I’m using a metal file holder as a way to organize my cutting boards in my lower cabinet. I prefer this rather than having them laying flat because I can see all of them right away.   Question: Maybe you don’t use them\, but do you use plastic storage containers?   Jessica: I store them in two places. I like glass. I have them stacked. The ones I use are the Pyrex from Target. I’m slowly building my supply. Every time I go to Target I’ll buy one more.   The plastic containers I keep matched up. It’s important to make sure that all of your plastic containers have a lid and if they don’t\, get rid of it.   There are a variety of ways for storing them\, but it is always tricky.   Question: What do you recommend for storage of medium sized kitchen appliances\, like waffle irons\, slow cookers etc.   Jessica: For me\, I keep them in one of the bins at the bottom of my pantry. Some of my bigger items can also fit into a lower cabinet. Just keep them lower because they are heavy and it will also make them easier to get to. \n \n \n \n \n \n One of the most important things when you are organizing your drawers is for you to be able to see everything that is in your drawer\, basket or bin. \n \n - Jessica\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Children's Closet and Dresser: \n \n \n \n Ranya: My daughter’s closet was a project that Jess and I worked on together. I was previously using it as storage and it was messy. It wasn’t a space that I used every day.   I have her jackets hanging. We have the shoes underneath the jackets. All we bought for the space were hangers. We repurposed an item that was downstairs to store her shoes. Always look in your home first to see what you have before going out to purchase something.   Another item that we repurposed is storing her socks\, underwear\, hats and gloves. The only other thing that we kept hanging were her dresses. Everything else we folded and put in the drawers. In the basket on the upper shelf of the closet is unused/extra hangers.   Anything that didn’t need to be hung was file folded away in her drawers.   Jessica: The file folding is so important! It’s another way to ensure that you can see everything in the drawer. The items are stacked vertically. Please don’t let re-folding your clothes overwhelm you. It can be as simple as\, however you were folding it\, giving it one more fold and then stack it vertically. It will save you a ton of space and will help you see everything in the drawer. You will be able to grab and go. File folding system is a must.   Rayna: We made sure that all my daughter’s clothes were what she can wear now or later when she’s older.   A system I started when she was about 3 months old is putting something she has grown out of in a big plastic bin from Target. I label the bin\, for example 0-3 months. I continue this process for the age range of the clothes and store each of the bins in a different closet. The clothes are already organized by size for if we need them in the future. If not\, then they can be donated.   Jessica: I have a different method in my children’s closets for clothes. I put two open bins in my children’s closet that are labeled “donate” and one called “sentimental.” As soon as they grow out of something we put them in the appropriate bin.   The reason that my process is different from Ranya is because I know that we do not need to keep the clothes for future use. I just need a quick way to put it somewhere.   An item is considered sentimental if it was sent to them from someone special or has a story behind it. You really need to be selective with what goes into the bin. Before I take the items in the bin up to the attic for long term storage\, a suggestion is to put a little note with it. The note or picture of your child in it will remind you why you kept it.   Ranya: I leave early for work and my husband gets our daughter ready in the morning. Our master bedroom is downstairs and our daughter’s room is upstairs. I have placed some drawer dividers (a four pack from Amazon) within the drawer and placed labels within the drawer specifying the day of the week. I put pajamas and one outfit in the drawer in our bedroom so things are accessible for my husband and makes things easier in the morning.   Question: I have really deep dresser drawers. How do you use the file folding system and still use up that space?   Jessica: Could you put your bulkier items in the drawer\, like sweaters and sweatshirts in there while still stacking them vertically?   There are also risers that you can buy that might be meant more for shelves in your cupboards\, but you could use that and make two layers while still seeing what’s underneath.   We just get creative with these things. That’s what’s fun about this…everything is a new challenge.   I use the same bins that were from the Container Store shown before\, in one of the areas we store our children’s toys. It is important to have things labeled. My son likes to dump everything out\, so it was beneficial to take things out of the original packaging.   We make custom labels if you would like to have labels made for you. The labels on the toys\, I added a picture so my youngest could help clean up. It makes a huge difference. You want it to be as easy as possible. It’s important to have them included in the clean up process.   Another hack I do is repurpose the plastic zippered bag that sheets come in to store puzzle pieces.   Ranya: We don’t expect to have upkeep with our projects. Things should stay organized\, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t grow out of things. You may have to change a couple of processes or a couple of small things every now and then. There shouldn’t be any major upkeep\, for example reorganizing your pantry every month. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ranya’s Bathroom \n \n \n \n Ranya: My bathroom is another project that Jess and I worked on together. Before the reorganization\, I had two big baskets on the counter\, one on each side. We had all of our main products in the baskets.   We ended up trying to minimize what is on the counter.   I liked having my makeup bag on the counter because if I needed it\, I could just grab and go. Every morning I was digging through the bag to find my makeup. We got this turn table from Target called “the small round turntable.” This has been my favorite thing that we changed because I’m not digging through a beg every morning.   Pretty much all we leave out is the makeup\, soap\, water pick\, contact solution\, and toothbrushes.   The big project was under the cabinet. We used plastic bins that we got from the Container Store. They come in all sizes.   We labeled all the bins. The cool part is the plastic separators are removable.    Jess and I always say to overbuy the bins in all sorts of sizes and heights. We weren’t sure what we would need and what was going to fit in a particular spot. So we recommend overbuying\, saving the receipt and returning whatever is not used.   For our clients\, we don’t charge them for everything we buy\, we only charge them for the supplies we use. Jessica: We measure first\, but we don’t always know the flow of the space.   Ranya: You just never know. We measure before we go and while we are there.   I put the makeup that I use less often under the counter. I can easily pull out the plastic bin when I need them.   As you can see\, these are different labels than what we showed you in Jess’s pantry.   We have two different types of label makers and can do both if you’re interested. We also purchase products from various places such as Target\, Amazon and The Container Store.   Jessica: Having everything labeled and organized is going to save you money as well. There is the cost upfront to buy bins etc.   Then you can shop according to how full the bins are and you can see everything you have easily. \n \n \n \n Jessica’s Bathroom \n \n \n \n Jessica: I’ll quickly show another option for a bathroom.  This is the Master Bath. We have an extra closet where we put cleaning supplies and linens. Ranya didn’t have that so we had to fit it all under her sink.   I use lazy-susan turntables under my sink in the cabinet. It is so easy to get to everything. Make sure you have it labeled so you know what you have.   Question: Where do you keep the trash and the toilet paper? What we have tried to do is keep it under the sink because we have dogs.   Jessica: We have a toilet closet and we keep the trash can is tucked by the toilet. I’m able to keep the extra rolls of toilet paper in the bottom section of my linen closet.   One thing we highly recommend when you buy toilet paper\, kids diapers\, wipes etc. you unpack it and stack it. This will make it grab and go when you need it.   Ranya: I keep my toilet paper in the garage because I don’t have a place to store it. Since it is in the garage I don’t unpack it\, but I do recommend unpacking it if you are able to. I have a toilet paper holder next to the toilet where we store about 4 at a time and replace them when it starts to get empty.   I don’t really have a lot of space in my bathrooms or in my kitchen. We keep the little trash can next to the toilet and take it out every few days. Question: Do you ladies have a favorite room to organize? Ranya: Maybe pantry if I had to pick one.   Jessica: Yes! It’s so fun because you can get so creative in a pantry with different kinds of bins. There’s a lot of ways you can get creative with your designs. You will all have to follow us on social media for inspiration as we redo things.   It’s truly a way to be creative. It’s like an art form. My master closet is my work in progress. Probably like in a lot of people’s houses\, my own space is the last I do because I need the other spaces in the house to be working. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica’s Master Closet \n \n \n \n Jessica: I’ll quickly take you through the master closet. I’m really excited about it and I have a few other things coming. It’s a work in progress so you will have to stay tuned for the finished product.   We hang a lot of stuff on the wall\, hats\, jewelry organizer. We are fortunate to have a lot of hanging space so my husband and I hang most tops except for exercise clothing.   I am currently down a deep rabbit hole of ordering my sixth version of velvet hangers. Not all are created equally! I wanted to swap out all the plastic hangers for velvet. They will save us even more hanging space because they are thinner. However\, you have to be really careful because some are flimsy and others shed. I will need to do a blog post about it.   I have my hanging stuff sectioned off. T-shirts move into long sleeve shirt section and then my dresses. Within the sections they are in color order starting with white as a section breaker and then going in ROYGBIV.   My husband’s side is the same.   We have all of our items out and don’t change things seasonally. If you have limited space swapping out clothing based on the season is a good option.   My sweaters are file folded and stacked vertically. It’s a really nice way to see your sweaters. You can purchase dividers to keep them upright.   I also have a donate bin in my closet.   Shoes are always a struggle for people. I have stackable plastic cubbies with doors on them to store my shoes. I put one pair within each one. If you decide to do something like this\, please make sure you measure because they make a lot of different sizes. The boxes I ordered off of Amazon. They come flat and you put them together.   Absolutely Simplified will be happy to share any links to purchase.   I roll up magazines to keep my boots upright. If you don’t have the space then you can fold the tops down. \n \n \n \n Final Comments \n \n \n \n Crissy: That was awesome ladies! I have so many ideas!   Jessica: It is so satisfying when you can have your space done. We truly enjoy doing this for other people. It’s a creative space for us that’s different from the space we have in our teaching jobs.   Ranya: Both jobs are very rewarding. Crissy: We are grateful for you both joining us and sharing your homes with us. Jessica: We have a website and offer in-person and virtual services. We help with moves\, pantry redos\, anything you can organize. Check out our website.   We can also be found on Instagram and Facebook. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica and Ranya both hold Bachelor’s Degrees in education from NC State University and are High School math teachers. Over their years of teaching math and teaching together\, their passions in helping students organize their processes to arrive at solutions has translated into a passion for organizing spaces for others beyond the classroom. They have now taken these skills to your homes where they are able to further expand on their passions for simplifying to help clients in their own processes and living spaces. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Spread the word \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Facebook-f\n \n \n \n \n Twitter\n \n \n \n \n Google-plus-g\n \n \n \n \n Linkedin-in\n \n \n \n \n Snapchat
