Motherhood is full of unexpected challenges: complicated delivery stories, frustrating feeding routines, unwieldy sleep schedules, temper tantrums and the list goes on. We are often so busy keeping everyone fed and cared for that we forget to tend to ourselves—and especially our inner monologues. But we are constantly thinking. Assessing, making judgments, decisions, assumptions, thinking about what has been done and what is left to do. It never stops—and it can affect the way we feel about ourselves. Have you ever stopped to really listen to what your inner monologue is saying?
Writing is a tool for processing that inner voice. It has been shown to reduce anxiety, help people manage depression and make meaning out of traumatic experiences. It can help busy moms understand their brains and how they are feeling, making it easier for constructive, effective communication. And it doesn't have to be time-consuming or perfectly written.
Join Kim Hawley, writer and founder of the national support group Strength Through Story, as she leads us through writing exercises that will help us connect us to our inner monologues and take better care of our minds.
