Join us for our March Conversation Circle as we discuss two TED Talks on the issues of Maternal Care, Race, & Mortality.
About this Event
View the two TED Talks linked below (approximately 27 minutes total) and then join your fellow moms for a discussion of this very important topic.
Miriam Zoila Pérez's TED Talk: How Does Racism Affect Pregnant Women And Babies?
Why do pregnant women of color have different health outcomes from their white counterparts? Writer and activist Miriam Zoila Pérez explains the ways racism manifests for these women and their babies.
Miriam Zoila Pérez is a writer, trained doula, and activist focused on race, health, and gender. Pérez is the founder of the blog Radical Doula, the author of The Radical Doula Guide, and the co-host of the podcasts Tonic and Radio Menea. Pérez advocates for methods that can help diminish disparities in maternal health for women of color. In her TED Talk, she specifically focuses on the work of Jennie Joseph (The JJ Way®), a midwife who provides prenatal care through her Orlando clinic.
Wanda Irving TED Talk: How the US Medical Community Fails Black Mothers
Maternal Care Reformer Wanda Irving had her life turned upside down when she lost her only daughter, Shalon Irving, at the hands of “the covert bias of her medical provider.” As Wanda explains, “that very bias, fueled by structural racism, is the root cause of disparities in health care. That very bias impacted Shalon’s outcome, and caused her to be included in the maternal mortality statistics for 2017.”
In her powerful TEDMED Talk, "How the US medical community fails Black mothers", Wanda reveals the horrific statistics that feed into the systemic disparities which result in Black women dying at rates almost 300% higher than White women. Today, over 3 years later, Wanda is working to promote accountability measures in postpartum care bills and she invites us to use the full range of our resources to eliminate inequity.

Join some of your mom friends for a yoga class in beautiful Dix Park! This class is offered free by Dix Park and you must register for the class in advance. Registration opens up at noon on March 31st. Be sure to snag your spot early.
We will meet at the park and plan to post up near each other for class.
Instructor: Natalia Mejia
Bring a yoga mat, if you have one, a towel and a filled water bottle. Water is not available in the park. There are port-a-johns available, but they may be a significant walk from the yoga location. The minimum age is 12 years old and minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.
Challenge yourself to a Virtual 5K Race!
Make it even better by challenging a few of your friends!
This event is a way for us all to come together and demonstrate our support of quality care for mothers everywhere! Your participation helps raise essential funds for Every Mother Counts.
HOW IT WORKS:
Register for the 5K Run/Walk
It's more fun with friends! Tell your friends about the race and why you're running. It's always more fun when your friends are running alongside you (even if from afar), cheering you on, and maybe even talking a little smack (we won't judge)!
It’s Virtual - This means that you can choose when, where, and how to participate! Run, walk, jog, bike, or hike your 5K. Heck, you can even hop, skip, or jump it... though we think that might lead to some pretty sore calves. The 5K window will begin on April 11th, the first day of Black Maternal Health Week. Participants may complete their 5K anytime between April 11th - 30th.
Log your workouts on the results page (click here). You have until April 30, 2021 to submit your results.
We'll ship your awesome race swag to your door! (Swag will begin being shipped on May 3rd).
Members: Be sure to book your one-on-one session with RD, Maggie Perkins!

Join us as we speak with Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, best-selling author of Mommy Burnout, host of Dr. Sheryl's PodCouch, and TEDx speaker. Dr. Ziegler specializes in stress, parenting, mental health, and burnout.
After working with thousands of mothers in their battle to raise their children well, Dr. Ziegler has listened to countless women say that they feel they are the only ones going through certain challenges in their parenting or marriages. After hearing these stories for so long, she started to feel like she was carrying around a huge secret. And although much of her job entails keeping secrets, she felt like this was a secret worth sharing.
In 1963, Betty Friedan wrote of “the problem that has no name” in her landmark book The Feminine Mystique. By 2010, Dr. Ziegler thought that her work had allowed her to create a set of universal truths about motherhood today. By examining these truths and acknowledging them, she wondered if there could be a shift in the motherhood landscape. By giving a name to Friedan’s “problem” with no name, at least in the context of her work, could women’s health and happiness improve? And ultimately would the lives of children improve?
Join us for an ask anything Expert Q&A session with the one and only, Dr. Sheryl Ziegler.

Join us for our April Book Club discussion of "you are a f*cking awesome mom" by Leslie Ann Bruce.
About this Event
A much-needed voice of encouragement for every woman who had a baby and lost her mind
Sometimes, motherhood feels never-ending. A child is born, chaos ensues, and it seems like life will never return to normal.
In You Are a F*cking Awesome Mom, award-winning journalist and Instagram star Leslie Anne Bruce acknowledges that, yes, motherhood is a total mind f*ck-but then she offers the self-empowerment lessons mothers need to get through the psychic upheaval and emerge stronger than ever. After childbirth, a woman's body, her relationships, and her very sense of self are tested like never before. Bruce encourages readers to look past the sugarcoated truisms about the miracles of child-rearing in order to embrace the real joys of motherhood, spit-up stains and all.
Loaded with unfettered support from a mom who has been through it all, You Are a F*cking Awesome Mom offers a lifeline of encouragement, inspiration, and community for the mama who got a baby, lost her mind, and desperately wants to find herself again.
